I was born in Morristown, Tennessee in 1922, attended the city schools there, had my pre-med at Harvard (Class of 1944), married Julia Anne Stanton in Memphis in 1945, graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1946, interned at Ford Hospital, served in the Army in Heidelberg Germany (1947-1949), residency in internal medicine at Ford Hospital. Practiced medicine in Kingsport, Tennessee 1952-1997. Our children: Virginia Lee (Ginny) 1950, Barnard 1972, singer and band manager (Bales Gitlin Music), Ct. One son, Basie Gitlin, sophomore at Yale, Donald W. (Don) Jr. 1953 Harvard and U.T. (M.D. internist) North Carolina. Katy senior at UNC. Molly sophomore at Harvard. Hugh Barton (Bart) 1955. Vanderbilt, U. Mass. (energy engineer) Mass. Celia 10. John Stanton (Jack) 1958 Oberlin, Cooper Union (architect) Manhattan. Lucy 11 and Ella 9.
We belong to the United Methodist Church.
Took up swimming in 1997 and began competing in the senior games in 2000. Competed in the national games in 2001 (Baton Rouge), 2003 (Newport News), 2005 (Pittsburgh) and 2007 (Louisville). A gold, silver and bronze medal in 2007.
